Sawadi - Briefly
Sawadi is a 3.5-hectare organic smallholding in the heart of the beautiful Skoura Palm groves, with charming Kasbah style accommodation within the grounds. It has fruit orchards, herb and vegetable gardens, olive groves and grape vines, and keeps chickens, pigeons, sheep and bees, producing seasonal fruit and vegetables, meat, olive oil, homemade preserves and eggs. They also have donkeys, which can give the children carriage rides through the palm groves – a sure fire way to make them forget about their computer games!
The management strive hard to make the farm as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible, and take very seriously their social responsibility to contribute to, and help maintain, the local community ethos.
Sawadi - Completely
Sawadi has been built using traditional methods, and respecting the local Berber architecture. Its thick walls are coated with mud and straw, and have small windows allowing the interior of the kasbahs to remain cool in summer and warm in winter. The ceilings are made with weaved reeds, four or five layers deep providing excellent insulation, and have exposed eucalyptus or poplar beams keeping them in place. Some of the interior walls are made of Tadelakt while others are simply whitewashed, and the floors are traditionally tiled.
There is a large and attractive bar / restaurant, and comfortable salons – all with roaring open fires for chilly winter evenings. The lovely covered terrace is an extension of the restaurant, and overlooks the inviting swimming pool and orchards with hammocks strung between the trees. There is a large playground area for children and adults within the olive grove, where you can find miniature bowling, petanque, badminton, table tennis, basketball hoop, fronton court and wall, swings and slide.
The eco-friendly element
Local people are employed to work both in the hotel and to farm the land. Only natural fertilisers are used, and pesticides such as a black soap spray to control ants and aphids. The swimming pool is treated by electrolysis, obviating the need for chlorine, and the use of solar panels are steadily being introduced.
Even though the farm has two wells, water conservation is a high priority at Sawadi, for example, irrigation of the older tree plantations (palm, olive, almond etc) is done frugally and at carefully selected times of the day. Wastewater is treated on site by means of a proper septic tank with horizontal filtering to avoid contamination of the water table. This system meets European standards, making Sawadi one of the rare sites in Morocco to have achieved such a recognised level of respect for the environment.
