Ksar Massa - Briefly

Located in the heart of the Souss Massa National Park with a seemingly endless sandy beach stretching out before it, the Ksar Massa is a formidable pink fortress perched on a twelve acre field of dunes, watching over the wild Atlantic ocean with an air of calm and serenity.  You are invited to share the National Park with pink flamingoes, cinder crane, teal and bald ibis, and the beach with the local fishermen who live in caves a little way down the coastline to the North of the hotel.  Enjoy the sense of remote isolation enjoyed by the villagers of Sidi R’bat for aeons, yet a mere 45-minute drive from the international airport of Agadir.

Ksar Massa - Completely

Having travelled 12 kms down a dusty track across the languid plains of the Souss National Park, the Ksar Massa and its magnificent ocean backdrop is a sight for sore eyes. Its beautifully terraced gardens filled with cacti, succulents and salt-loving plants are the result of many years of trial and error before finding just the right plants.

The two lovely swimming pools provide a cool, calm dip for those not wanting to brave the great Atlantic waves, and plenty of comfy sun beds are arranged around the pools for sun worshipping guests. The views along the coastline and out across the water are breathtaking, and the hotel perfectly placed for watching the beautiful setting sun as it dips over the horizon and disappears into the sea.

Beautiful salons and a library and TV room provide warmth and comfort on a chilly winters day, with welcoming open fires dotted around the common areas.

The Beach

Be sure to take a walk along the stunning sandy beach.  Turn right and head north along the shoreline to visit the fisherman’s caves, a fascinating sight with painted, numbered doors over the cave entrances, corresponding with the number on their fishing boats.  If the tide is right there is a plethora of rock pools along the way all teeming with life – large crabs and beautiful sea anemones, molluscs and shrimps, small fish and snails together with beautiful shells and pebbles and seaweed galore.

We were invited into one of the caves, and were surprised to see it decked out like a little shop, with all sorts of jewellery, shells and beautiful knick-knacks for sale.  After partaking in a little mint tea and having a go on a set of bongo-type drums, we emerged into the sunshine to find some of the other fishermen had quickly set up stalls outside their caves.  A wealth of attractively arranged fossils and hand crafted ornaments, more shells and jewellery, and all at quite reasonable prices too!  Outside of the fishing season, this is how they make enough money to feed their families, so do try to purchase a little something to thank them for their hospitality.
