Kasbah Mohayut - Briefly
The Kasbah Mohayut is a charming little Auberge, perfect for those wanting to experience the desert without spending hours on end in a 4x4 or days on a camel. It is also a great location for fossil hunters, with real enthusiasts staying for up to a week. It is more usual for guests stay for 2 or 3 nights, with one of those nights spent in a desert camp – an amazing experience under the spectacular Saharan sky.
Kasbah Mohayut - Completely
Kasbah Mohayut is situated near the village of Merzouga at the edge of Erg Chebbi – some of the highest sand dunes in North Africa, reaching up to 150 metres in places. The dunes stretch for 22 km in length and are 5 km wide, and whilst not as vast as the dunes of Ch’gaga to the south of M’hamid, they are still very impressive!
Pise (mud) walls surround the grounds of the hotel, encircling the attractive gardens, main building, rooms and pool. There is a bar area, lounge and restaurant, patios and lovely roof terraces from which to gaze at the immensely starry sky. Pretty lanterns and candles softly light your way at night so as not to produce any light pollution, bringing with them a wonderfully warm ambience.
The hotel is full of local arts and crafts, fossils, and some hugely impressive specimens of ‘desert roses’ – crystal rosette-like mineral formations, shaped by the forces of wind, water and pressure in arid sandy conditions.
The staff at the Kasbah are local, as is the young owner – Moha Mezan – who was born in the small village just metres from the hotel. You will see his friendly, helpful manner mirrored in his attentive staff as you experience the wonderful Berber welcome for yourself!
