Dar Meziana

Dar Meziana - Briefly

This stunningly delightful Riad in Chefchaouen opened its doors in 2007, and is run by the lovely Meriem Abdoul, wife of Hassan who owns the Casa Hassan.  It has been beautifully renovated using local craftsmen, traditional methods and materials, but is full of zany little twists, such windows on a skew, and a bed built into a wall, where you have to climb on the sofa to get into it!  Meriem designed and decorated the house herself, and it really is a work of art!  The staff are friendly and welcoming, and with so much to look at, you will struggle to drag yourself away and explore the town itself!

Dar Meziana - Completely

Although small and simple as far as facilities and services are concerned, Dar Meziana is definitely one of my favorite Riads in Morocco.  It is packed with objects d’art, local handicrafts, painting, ornaments, carpets and lamps, Zouak (intricately hand painted) furniture, doors and ceilings, and with the Tadelakt bathrooms with hammered copper sinks, zelige tiles mixed with modern glass bricks, carved wood work, copious plants and incredibly colorful lighting at night – this Riad really is unique!

Dar Meziana has gorgeous roof terraces with lovely views to the west over the town - perfect for watching the setting sun, with the riff mountain peaks rising up behind it.  The approach to the Riad is typically ‘Chaouen’, with gorgeous blue-washed steps leading up through the white-washed walls of the alleyway, and plant pots on every step.  Meriem told me that it was their idea to paint their alleyway with the blue steps and place the plants on them, and the rest of Chefchaouen followed suit….!

  • Salon
  • Roof terraces

The seven en-suite double rooms are arranged over three floors, and each is unique with individual, exquisite styles exuding warmth and comfort.

Breakfast and dinner are included, with dinner being served at the Casa Hassan’s restaurant a short walk from the Riad.  The lovely breakfast can be served on one of the terraces if the weather is warm enough, or in the salon in front of a blazing fire on chillier days.  Dinner is simple Moroccan cuisine, but totally delicious!

Neither Dar Meziana or Casa Hassan are licensed, and you will be hard pushed to find anywhere selling alcohol in Chefchaouen.  The Casa Hassan will be happy to cork a bottle of wine for you if you bring one with you, but they will decant it into a jug to save upsetting the locals – Chefchaouen is a very dry town!
