Dar Azawad - Briefly
Dar Azawad is a beautiful desert rose rising up out of the last palm plantation of the south before hitting great Saharan desert. It is 400 meters from the first dune, and 5 kms from M’hamid, which is the town where the road runs out and the desert truly begins! Basking in the heat of the Saharan sun, Dar Azawad is an oasis of green plants and palm trees, flowers and shrubs, with the most inviting pool you will find in the south. It also has three wonderful desert camps reached by camel or 4x4, so is ideal for a two or three night stay, with at least 1 night spent under the amazingly vivid Milky Way, or ‘River of Stars’ as the Berbers call it.
Dar Azawad - Completely
French owner and manager Vincent Jacqet created Dar Azawad out of pise (fortified mud), and designed it in the style of a Kasbah with thick mud walls surrounding its 2.5 hectares. The beautiful gardens are truly magnificent, especially when you realise the hard work and diligence that went in to creating them.
Having taken 2 whole years of watering with fresh water just to remove the salt from the earth, trial and error with different plants and shrubs brought them to where they are today. With the help of the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, over 1500 trees and plants (mostly indigenous) including 4 different kinds of acacia, bougainvilleas, tamarix, olive trees, primulas, lantana, atriplex and henna are now thriving, with the aid of four full time gardeners. But of course, for all their continued hard work - the date palm remains King!
Comfortable sun beds are positioned around the large terrace which surrounds the gorgeously tempting swimming pool - a real luxury in the hot Saharan desert. Four large pergolas provide vital shade during the hottest part of the day, helping you to feel refreshed and relaxed. Lanterns and candles light the terrace and gardens in the evening making a lovely setting for an aperitif and al fresco dinner.
The large, comfortable lounge and bar are warm in winter from the blazing open fire, and its roof terrace has panoramic views and comfortable cushions for star gazing with your Mojito – the perfect place to really appreciate the deafening silence of the desert.
