Auberge Chez Momo II - Briefly
Nestling on a hillside in the Valley of Ouirgane on the southern edge of the village sits the simple yet completely enchanting Chez Momo II. The hotel is delightfully rustic yet extremely comfortable, and with beautiful gardens and breathtaking views, you will be tempted to linger for a while and admire the surrounding splendour. With attentive and friendly local Berber staff who are some of the most welcoming to be found in Morocco, it is an idyllic location for those seeking peaceful relaxation, as well as those hoping for a slightly more energetic break, with some wonderful walking treks available for all levels of fitness.
Auberge Chez Momo II - Completely
Built completely with traditional materials and local craftsmen from the village of Ouirgane, Chez Momo II opened in 2009. Its predecessor (Chez Momo) lies at the bottom of the flooded valley opposite, made so during the construction of the huge reservoir and dam in 2008. Owner Mohamed Id El Mouden lost no time in creating his new and improved Auberge, keeping the original simplicity, style and charm, but gaining more space and enhanced views.
Being in the heart of some of the most magnificent mountain countryside, Chez Momo II is surrounded by Aleppo Pine, Eucalyptus, Green Oak and Juniper trees. The snow-capped mountain peaks encircle the valley, and countless ‘veins’ of mule tracks crisscross the red earth of their slopes.
The traditional Berber architecture of the Auberge consists mainly of stone, ochre bricks and wood, with the use of huge old mosque and barn doors, oleander wood ceilings, zelige and Tadelakt to really bring the buildings alive. The heavy cedar wood furniture, and décor including wrought iron sculptures, pottery, colourful carpets and wool blankets from the Atlas tie everything together, and provide a constant treat for the eyes.
Within the grounds there is a main building which houses the reception, kitchen, reading lounge, dining rooms and bar. The guest areas are abundant with magnificent open fireplaces for chilly winter evenings, and doors which open out on to the large patios and terraces during the hotter summer months.
The colourful, terraced gardens are full of flowering plants, olive trees and lush greenery. Surrounding the beautiful swimming pool (13m x 6m) are comfortable sun loungers, luscious lawns and an adjacent patio with tables and chairs. On the level below the pool area are the separate lodges, each containing 1 or 2 suites and overlooking smaller individual gardens. Lanterns and candles beautifully light the pathways at night, transforming the gardens into a softly flickering wonderland.

Trekking
Walking and mule trekking in the surrounding countryside and Berber hamlets can be organised with local English or French-speaking guides. You can simply go for a little stroll around the lake or follow one of the well-trodden tracks on your own, or hire a guide for a couple of hours or a full day. Trekking can include lunch, usually taken with a local family in one of the Berber hamlets, although the hotel can provide a packed lunch instead.
Each of the junior suites and suites are very simple, with comfortable beds, rustic furnishings and en-suite bathroom with shower (no baths). All have simple heating and an open fireplace, but no air-conditioning. Fans can be requested at reception during the hotter months. There are family suites available, with one double and two single beds.
Breakfast and dinner are included, and guests can eat anywhere they choose - in the garden, on the terraces or patios, or in one of the two dining rooms. Their traditional Moroccan cuisine is incredibly good, and an excellent lunch is available upon request. Service is typically Moroccan – incredibly warm and friendly, and lacking any sense of urgency – you have no choice but to chill out, relax and completely wind down!
