Walking Treks
Short excursions, half and full day, overnight and multi day treks can all be arranged by the Kasbah du Toubkal and Dar Imlil. Explore the fascinating local area to see a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries, including that of the villages of the Ait Mizane tribe, a friendly people who welcome visitors to experience their simple existence.
With mule support available for your luggage and for yourself (on request), the area is accessible for all levels of fitness. Treks are booked on an individual basis, meaning you would not be joining a group of strangers, but would have your own guide and muleteer. Where the trek involves staying in a lodge, hut or berber house, you may then be sharing with other trekkers.
Short treks to nearby villages – 45 mins to 1 hour
For an easy trek from the Kasbah, the Villages of Mzig and Targa Imoula take around 45 minutes to an hour for a round trip.
Half day treks – 4 hours – Moderate level of fitness required
A moderate walk to the mountain pass of Tizi ‘n’ Tamatert will take you via the village of Tamatert. Here you will be at approx. 2200 m above sea level.
An alternative route for a moderate half-day trek would be to follow the Reraya River, across the Ait Mizane valley to the Sanctuary of Sidi Chamharouch by way of the village of Aremdt.
Full day treks – 6 – 7 hours – Good level of fitness required
One trek takes you into the Imane valley over the Tizi ‘n’ Tamatert pass, to the villages of Tinhourine and Aguersiwal. The route follows river courses and passes terraces and walnut groves.
An alternative trek to for this fitness level and duration would be to the village of Tizi Oussem via the mountain pass at Tizi ‘n’ Mzig, returning through the village of Malat.
Camel Trekking – full day
A full days camel trek, starting at the village of Amizmiz or Tahanout. This camel trek includes the 1-hour road transfer from Marrakech or the Kasbah du Toubkal to the village starting point, lunch and transportation back to the Kasbah or Marrakech.
Alternatively you may choose to stay overnight in a tent or Berber village and return to the Kasbah or Marrakech the following morning.
Mountain hut or Berber house – overnight – Moderate fitness advised
These are used for those wishing to trek for two or three days on a circular route. An overnight stay in a Mountain Hut usually comprises a communal bunk-bedded room, and has basic toilet facilities. Showers – if available – will generally be cold.
Staying in a Berber house and being hosted by a Berber family is a way to really appreciate the life of the Berbers. You should note that the house itself is unlikely to have even basic toilet and washing facilities – i.e. a hole in the ground and a bucket of water is generally the norm.
Azzaden Remote Trekking Lodge – 2 Day Trip – Moderate level of fitness
Starting from Imlil, this trip includes two full days of trekking with the services of a qualified mountain guide and muleteer throughout the trip. You will stay overnight at the Azzaden remote trekking lodge in a private en-suite room (double or twin) with shared lounge and terrace.
Azzaden Remote trekking package – 5 night trip – Moderate fitness level
This 5 night trekking package starts with 2 nights at the Dar Imlil in an en-suite room. Whilst there, a guide will take you on different treks before taking you on the 4 to 6 hour trek to the Azzaden remote trekking lodge. Here you will spend nights 3 and 4 in an en-suite room, and on the middle day you can either trek out again from the lodge, or just relax and enjoy the quiet solitude. Trek back down to the Dar Imlil for the final night. Upgraded accommodation at the Kasbah du Toubkal sugject to availability, price on request.
Ascension of Mount Toubkal – A good level of fitness is advised
This is a 2-day trek with one night at the base camp (3106m) in the Neltner hut, 14 kms from the Kasbah. You will share with other hikers in bunk bed dormitory style accommodation. It is a good 5-hour trek to the camp via Sidi Chamarouch, where an advance party including the cook will meet you. The ascent (to 4167m) takes place early the next morning, returning to camp for lunch. After lunch you would then trek back to the Kasbah. You do need moderate to good fitness levels for this, not least due to the lower oxygen levels at these heights. It is possible to add in an extra night so as not to have to do the ascent and trek back to the Kasbah in the same day.
Prices - The above treks would be included as part of your tailor-made travel itinerary. Please ask one of our specialist travel consultants for a suggested itineary and price. Extra mule support available for most treks – please ask for this to be included in your quotation if required.
